About Me

Science writer and editor with over 12 years’ of experience writing across a broad range of scientific and health-related disciplines.

I always say I know a little about a lot. I’m lucky enough to cover numerous different topics spanning the broad umbrella of ‘science’ including climate change, weather and environmental science; astronomy and space science; sensors and optics; nanotechnology; material science; and medicine, health and wellbeing.

I don’t have a ‘specialist area’ per se, but I am drawn to topics with a green angle, whether that be how climate change is affecting our weather patterns and natural disasters, or how a newly developed material could replace carbon-emitting fossil fuels.

I also enjoy writing pieces focusing on the ‘how’ and ‘why’ – so why children starting primary school undergo certain health checks, or whether teeth are bones and how often we should be flossing them.

Because I cover such a wide range of scientific topics, I have become skilled at taking complex information from journals, scientific papers and press releases, and transforming it into something interesting and informative for any audience. I have experience writing for both B2B and B2C publications and understand the importance of tailoring my article to your audience.

My articles have appeared in/on Technology Networks, EHN and EHN Extra, LiveScience, Forward, Harpers Bazaar, Forward, Patient, Netdoctor, Laboratory News, YourWeather and various AZo Networks and NS Media titles.

But that’s not the end of my skills; I’ve also written content for publications focussing on law, airports, mining and more - I’ve even provided content for a well-known funeral plan provider! Copywriting projects have included writing for Elsevier, Capital Life, Summize and Drug Discovery World. I’m also skilled at proofreading and editing, taking on a number of projects for websites and medical professionals.

Let's just say if it involves words - I can probably help!

My Journey

I always wanted to be a journalist, ever since I was around 10 years old. My academic journey paved the way towards science; I always loved science, especially chemistry, and decided to embark on a BSc (Hons) in Natural Sciences at the University of Bath. In between taking courses on a mix of different science disciplines, I wrote for the university newspaper, Bath Impact, progressing from contributor to features editor before taking on the role of editor in my final year.

After graduating, I completed an NCTJ course, before joining Daryl Wilcox Publishing, where I edited their newsletter and blog for journalists, wrote news stories and focus interviews alongside my position as research executive.

Between 2009 and 2015, I was web editor at Laboratory News, writing science-based news and features, interviewing scientists and writing editorial comment pieces. I was responsible for editing and commissioning features, sourcing images, and proofreading. I also wrote for the quarterly companion series, and was responsible for the magazine’s website and social media output. You can see a selection of my work here.
